Namibia and Botswana — this guide's most natural self-drive pairing — now sit on opposite sides of the visa question entirely.

The change a lot of older content hasn't caught up with

As of April 1, 2025, Namibia ended visa-free entry for 33 nationalities, EU citizens included — a real, well-documented policy change. An e-visa or visa on arrival now costs roughly €82, valid 90 days. Botswana, by contrast, remains visa-free for EU passport holders. So the two countries in this account's most natural self-drive combo now sit on opposite sides of the visa question — worth knowing before you assume "it's all just Southern Africa, same rules."

On top of each country's own park and vehicle fees (already covered on the Namibia and Botswana pages individually), expect a rental company's own cross-border documentation fee — roughly €5–10 flat — plus government road tax or permits charged at the physical border. These amounts vary by crossing and aren't standardized; budget for it and confirm the exact figure with your specific rental company before departure rather than treating one number as universal.

KAZA Univisa — the Victoria Falls side

The KAZA Univisa is a joint visa for Zimbabwe and Zambia, priced at roughly €47 (US$50, per Zambia's official immigration site), valid for 30 days within any 12-month period, and usable for multiple entries between the two countries. It also explicitly covers day trips into Botswana via the Kazungula border — a real, practical way to tie a Victoria Falls stop back into a Botswana trip already planned, as long as you don't overnight in Botswana on that visa.

The East Africa combo's visa layer

Requirement Cost
Uganda eVisa ≈ €47
Tanzania eVisa (single-entry, most nationalities) ≈ €47
Zanzibar mandatory travel insurance (charged on arrival) ≈ €41/adult
Yellow fever certificate (Uganda, all travelers over age one) Required document, not a fee

<aside> ❗

Total visa-layer cost for the full Uganda + Kilimanjaro + Zanzibar combo lands around €135–180 per person depending on nationality and visa type — worth budgeting as its own line, since it's easy to undercount when planning each leg separately.

Rules change without much notice

Visa rules, fees, and border policies shift with little warning — this whole page is worth a direct spot-check against each country's official immigration site before booking, especially given how recently Namibia's own rules changed.
