What you don't have to book

Unlike Torres del Paine, there's no trail-permit race. You buy the park fee per entry, online or at the portal, and walk. That's the good news.

What does run out

• Beds in town, December to February. El Chaltén is small, and January is the tightest month. Book as soon as your dates are fixed.
• Perito Moreno ice treks. Minitrekking and Big Ice sell out one to three months ahead in peak season, and only one company runs them.
• Bus seats from El Calafate in January — book a day or two ahead rather than on the day.

Book enough nights

Fitz Roy is cloud-free on only about one day in five. The trip that sees it is the one that stays long enough: plan four or five nights, ideally a week, rather than a two-night stop.
