Botswana isn't expensive by accident — it's a deliberate tourism model, and the real numbers reflect that.

The short answer

For a 7-night, mid-range Botswana safari covering the Okavango Delta and/or Chobe, budget roughly €1,750–4,500 per person for the safari package itself — accommodation, meals, guiding, and game activities are almost always sold bundled, the same as other safari destinations. Add €900–1,600 for flights routed through Johannesburg to Maun or Kasane, and €85–190 for travel insurance. A realistic all-in total lands around €2,700–6,300 per person for the week.

Why Botswana costs more than its neighbors

Botswana deliberately runs a low-volume, high-value tourism model: strict limits on camp numbers and bed capacity inside its private concessions, rather than competing on visitor volume. This is a real, government-backed conservation strategy, not just premium marketing — and it's the direct reason package prices sit noticeably above South Africa or even Namibia for a comparable trip length.

Budget options have expanded in recent years (public campsites, mobile tented safaris), but "budget Botswana" is still priced above "budget" almost anywhere else in the region.

The safari package — €1,750–4,500 for 7 nights

This range spans public-campsite/mobile-tented setups at the low end to private lodge concessions at the high end — see the Okavango Delta vs. Chobe guide for how much the region you pick moves this number. Park fees are typically folded into package pricing, but if you're pricing a self-organized trip: Chobe and Moremi charge around $20/person/day, other parks around $14, plus a separate vehicle fee.

Flights — €900–1,600

Almost all routes from Europe connect through Johannesburg before a final short hop to Maun (Okavango) or Kasane (Chobe) — there's no realistic direct option, which is part of why this line runs higher than a Johannesburg-only safari destination.

Had a flight delayed, cancelled, or denied boarding on this trip — even in the past? Under EU261, an EU-departing flight delayed 3+ hours, cancelled, or overbooked can be worth €250–600 in compensation, and most member states let you claim for years afterward. Compensair checks your flight for free and files the claim for you — they take 30% of whatever you're awarded, plus a further 10% if the airline forces it to court, so you only pay out of the compensation itself.

Travel insurance — €85–190

This is the baseline travel insurance range — see our Botswana Insurance page for why a standard policy isn't the whole story for a remote Delta trip specifically.

What to book where

Safari packages and tours: browse and compare Botswana safari operators directly

Want the whole trip planned for you? If you'd rather hand the planning to a specialist than book camps and flights yourself, Go2Africa builds private, tailor-made safaris in Botswana. It is the high-end route: their own price guide puts mid-range Botswana safaris at roughly €1,400–2,100 per person per night (about US$1,650–2,420, sharing, flights excluded), so a week comes to about €10,000–14,500 per person before flights. You send an enquiry and they quote — prices aren't listed online, and planning is done in English. The cost breakdown above is still the way to check whether a quote is fair.
