Most people assume a delta floods in the wet season. Botswana's doesn't, at least not on the same schedule: the Okavango Delta's floodwaters originate as rainfall in the Angolan highlands months earlier, so water levels actually peak during Botswana's dry season (roughly June–August), not its wet one. That's also exactly when wildlife concentrates most densely around the remaining water sources — the dry season's two big draws reinforce each other rather than trading off.
Peak wildlife viewing, with animals concentrated at waterholes and along the Chobe riverfront as the landscape dries out elsewhere. June to August also brings the lowest malaria risk of the year alongside comfortable game-drive weather. This is also peak price and peak crowd season.

July through October is by far the busiest stretch in the parks, and popular camps book out well ahead.

The landscape turns lush and green, birding is excellent, and February brings antelope breeding season with newborns visible. Wildlife disperses more widely rather than concentrating at water sources, though the Savuti region and Kalahari still offer strong summer game viewing along migration routes. January specifically tends to bring real low-season pricing and noticeably thinner crowds.
A really good middle ground: the landscape is still green, rainfall is dropping off, Delta water levels are beginning their rise, and game viewing is strong without peak-season crowding or cost.
If peak wildlife viewing is the priority, book well ahead for June–October — this is also when Botswana's already-limited camp capacity (per its low-volume tourism model) gets tightest. If a lower price and thinner crowds matter more, January or the late-April/May shoulder window are worth a serious look.
