The seasons

• November to March — peak. Everything is open, beds are full, and January is the busiest month.
• Mid-October to mid-December, and March to April — the sweet spot. Thinner crowds and a reasonable chance of decent weather.
• May to mid-October — winter. Many services close, and the town gets very quiet.

What actually changes with the season

The park charges the same fee in January as in April. What changes is whether there's a bed, a bus seat, an ice-trek slot and an open restaurant. Shoulder season wins on all four without giving up much on weather.
